Joint
CSI Chapter
Meeting
Empire State
Building, New York, NY May 19, 2010 - The Metro New York Chapter joins
with our fellow members in the Long Island and New Jersey Chapters for a
joint meeting. We will be visiting the offices of Skanska USA Building
on the 32nd Floor of the Empire State Building in Manhattan. The Skanska
office has been awarded a LEED Commercial Interiors Platinum
certification. The tour will end with dinner at Annie Moore's
Restaurant. The date is a week later than our normal meeting date to
avoid a conflict with the CSI national convention in Philadelphia.
The
offices employ an under floor air system, natural daylighting,
sensor-controlled lighting systems, low VOC-emitting materials,
locally-sourced and recycled materials, location near public transit,
Energy Star-compliant appliances, waterless urinals, low-flow toilets,
and hand-sensing faucets. The Skanska offices use 35% less energy than
ASHRAE standards call for and have reduced water usage to 40% below
Energy Policy Act standards. Skanska (as the builder) recycled 80% of
the construction waste and preserved 40% of the non-structural interior
components. Recycled products were used throughout the office, and 28%
of materials were manufactured within 500 miles. The Forest Stewardship
Council also certified 89% of the wood-based materials used throughout
the office. Tour Start: Empire State Building, 350 Fifth Avenue, New
York; meet in Lobby.Start Time: 4:30 p.m. Note that this is earlier than
our usual meeting time. Dinner: 6:30 p.m. at Annie Moore’s, 50 East
43rd Street; program will be reports of the three Chapter presidents.
Reservations: Required. There are only 40 places for this tour, and the
first 40 who sign up will have a confirmed reservation. Reservations
will ONLY be paid-in-advance. Reservations will be through Brown Paper

professionals from different backgrounds together.
Who ever thought construction
specifications could be so much fun? Construction Specifications
Jeopardy® will test your knowledge of architectural and
construction-related trivia in the form of the television game show,
Jeopardy®. In the course of Regular Jeopardy®, Double Jeopardy®,
and Final Jeopardy® there are questions on architectural history,
building codes, materials, technical aspects of construction, AIA
contracts, famous architects, construction methods, architectural
design, local architectural history, CAD, specifications, and CSI
history.

Joint
Meeting with AIA Newark Suburban
Hilton Hotel,
Parsippany, NJ March 24, 2010 - The CSI New Jersey Chapter
held a joint meeting with the AIA Newark Suburban
Chapter. Our guest speaker was Mr. Matthew Holst, AIA, LEED
AP, an Associate Design Architect for Fletcher Thompson. Mr.
Holst's topic was "Designing with BIM".
As a design architect with over 8 years
of experience in a multitude of architectural projects including work
ranging from commercial, institutional, educational, and residential. On
these projects, the services provided range from programming and
feasibility analysis through site planning and construction. As an
Architect, Mr. Holst is responsible for presentation, schematic design,
design development, construction drawings and documents, and maintaining
primary client contact to ensure client satisfaction with the progress
of the project and final results. Constantly elevating design and
shaping solutions firm wide.
Designing with BIM explored the power
of designing with BIM and the personal strife of modifying our work
process in an effort to enhance our ability to convey design ideas to
clients. The presentation looked at three different
levels;
First: Our innate natural inability to
easily change and accept change willingly. "I know AutoCad, it
works for me, if it isn't broke don't fix it".
Second: Do you jump in the deep end of
the BIM pool head first or tip toe your way in through the shallow end.
Third: An overview of a recent project
being designed and produced with BIM. We all had an open discussion
throughout the presentation in an effort to learn from each other's
experiences. BIM has the ability to enhance our building designs,
produce projects faster, and achieve client buy-in much earlier in the
design process.
CSI
New Jersey Chapter Meeting at Princeton University
Princeton, NJ
February 18, 2010.
Welcome to 2010! The NJ Chapter of
CSI extended a general invitation to all current and past
members of the CSI Princeton Chapter and other design-build-construction
related professionals to join us at our February 18th evening
presentation and to consider becoming an active participant in the CSI

more about Ted Zoli
We offered this presentation in the Princeton
vicinity with the hope of renewed interest and participation among the
members of the Princeton Chapter.
As an EXTRA BONUS, for the remainder of
2010, the NJ Chapter of CSI will offer current and past members of the
CSI Princeton Chapter active participation in the NJ Chapter at no
change in cost from the dues you have already paid or would expect to
pay for the current years' membership in the CSI Princeton Chapter. As
peers in a great national organization, we would rather see you
participate in available programs and events then miss out on the
educational value and camaraderie we and CSI have to offer.
The NJ Chapter frequently conducts joint
programs with AIA Central Chapter, AIA Jersey Shore, The Architects
League of Northern NJ, AIA Newark Suburban, Tri-State Chapter of the NJ
Design-Build Institute of America, and other related professions and
industries at locations throughout central New Jersey, from Morristown
to Red Bank and Newark to the Princeton area.
We also have instituted an Emerging
Professionals Committee; tasked with attracting those recently entering
into the construction-related fields to get involved with CSI. If you
know an individual that fits this description, pass this invitation on.
Biography
– Ted Zoli is a structural engineer and the Vice President and
Technical Director (Bridges) of HNTB Corporation, a leading
infrastructure design firm. Using novel materials, Zoli works to
construct bridges that are both visually stunning and able to withstand
strong vibrations from wind and pedestrians. He has drawn on military
research on weapons technology to create state-of-the-art materials that
are both lightweight and blast-resistant. The elegant and colossal
Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge is one recent example of his work. In
2009 Zoli became the first structural engineer to receive a MacArthur
genius grant. Says the MacArthur Foundation: "In an era of aging
infrastructure and catastrophic structural collapses, Zoli is
safeguarding vulnerable links in the nation's highway system and
developing design principles for the construction of robust, new
landmarks in the United States and across the globe." Ted is also a
professor at Princeton University in CEE for the past 6 years, and is
generally considered to be the best bridge designer in the country. Ted
is also designer for the new Streicker pedestrian bridge that spans
Washington Road connecting the Ellipse walk near the Carl Icahn lab to a
new plaza constructed as part of The New Chemistry Building, south of
Jadwin Hall. The bridge is a key feature within the University's planned
"science neighborhood" linking the science community across
busy Washington Road
Ted Zoli was profiled on NBC Nightly
News. He was recognized last year as a MacArthur Fellow for his
work on designing and hardening bridges. Several of his HNTB-related
projects also were mentioned, including the Mary Avenue Bicycle
Footbridge in Cupertino, Calif.; the Blennerhassett Island Bridge in
West Virginia; and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in Omaha, Neb.

Paperless
Office and Construction Projects
The construction industry one of the last
segments of the economy to move toward a goal of being paperless. The
Destiny Mall project near Albany has come pretty close to achieving that
goal, using a combination of web-based electronic software,
three-dimensional design tools, and an openness to new ideas. Kim Sieber and Brian Watson of Cianbro
Construction, were responsible for designing, implementing, and
managing the information flow during design and construction of the
retail mall project of over $250 million and multiple phases. The team was brought together to achieve the Owner’s goal of using the
fewest natural resources possible during the construction of this
expansion. There were pitfalls, and Brian and Kim will speak about those
as well.
Technology progresses at
an ever-rapid pace… and it’s leaving the construction industry in
the dust!!! As a community we need to change the way we do business, and
going paperless is a major step in the right direction. Cianbro
experimented with managing a $250M+ mall expansion electronically and
our experiment soon became a way of life. By embracing a web-based
electronic software, by committing to 3-D design, by demanding that the
trades, the consultants, and the Owner participate as a condition of
employment, and by never shutting our minds to new ideas, we did it! We
are excited about sharing our experience with CSI so that you can make a
difference in how the construction industry specifies future projects.
It takes 28 days to learn a new habit or break an old one, are you
ready?
Brian W. Watson graduated Phi Eta Sigma
from the University of Florida with a BS in Building Construction. He's
also a member of Heavy Movable Structures Inc. Brian joined the Cianbro
Corporation right out of college in 1982. He has more than 25 years
experience in the construction industry. Throughout his career with
Cianbro he's worked at different levels of project management and
estimating on many diversified projects ranging in size from $1 million
to in excess of $300 million. He is currently the Project Manager for
Phase I of the Destiny USA project in Syracuse, NY.
About Cianbro: Cianbro is one of the East
Coast's largest civil and heavy industrial construction companies.
Employee-owned, Cianbro is headquartered in Pittsfield, Maine, and
serves the eastern seaboard from offices in Pittsfield and Portland,
Maine, Bloomfield, Connecticut, and Baltimore, Maryland. Cianbro is
recognized nationally for its safety and health programs. Founded in
